Sexual Assault Awareness: He might be a rapist if ...

Rather than repeating the stock advice given to girls and women about avoiding risky situations, I want to focus on more personal warning signs.

Note that the presence of a warning sign doesn't mean that a rape will soon follow. Many men who will never rape share one or more traits with rapists. Not all rapists will have all of the traits listed below.

So here's my list:

He might be a rapist if ... he laughs at boys and men who are always considerate toward girls and women.

He might be a rapist if ... he manipulates others to get what he wants.

He might be a rapist if ... he believes women secretly want to be used.

He might be a rapist if ... he ignores the word no in non-sexual situations.

He might be a rapist if ... he believes it isn't a crime if he doesn't get caught.

He might be a rapist if ... he holds others responsible for his actions.

He might be a rapist if ... he mocks rape victims who don't recognize danger until it's too late.

He might be a rapist if ... he becomes unexpectedly friendly when he gets you in a vulnerable place.

He might be a rapist if ... he hurts others easily and without remorse.

He might be a rapist if ... he focuses completely on his own goals and lets nothing stop him.

He might be a rapist if ... he defends accused acquaintance rapists as if he's defending himself.

He might be a rapist if ... he tries to pump you full of alcohol or other impairing substances.

He might be a rapist if ... he hurts animals.

He might be a rapist if ... he enjoys entertainment that mixes sex and violence.

He might be a rapist if ... he makes you feel guilty when you don't do what he wants you to do.

He might be a rapist if ... he believes some women want sex 24/7 and don't need to be asked.

He might be a rapist if ... he refuses to learn from his mistakes.

He might be a rapist if ... he traffics in stereotypes.

He might be a rapist if ... he abuses verbally or physically.

He might be a rapist if ... he says, "Rape is always wrong, but ..."

If you see any of these warning signs, deal with this person with the utmost caution.

There are more attitudes and patterns that enable otherwise decent people to rape, but this is a good start. Feel free to comment with your additions to this list.
