Mother Risks Life To Save Daughter Shot By Former Boyfriend

The original headline doesn't focus on this angle, but it should have.
The boy, a 17-year-old from Coleman [Michigan], had gone to H.H. Dow High School [in Midland] on Wednesday morning to try to talk to Jessica, but he was turned away by school officials, the police chief said. The boy then called her and asked her to meet him outside the building. After a conversation in the parking lot, the boy pulled a gun out of a backpack and shot her four times before [fatally] turning the gun on himself, St. Louis said.

The girl's mother, who had dropped her daughter off at the school, saw the shooting from her car and drove between the two to try to protect the girl, authorities said.
This decision by the girl's mother was a serious risk since bringing a gun to a school shows premeditation. Many of those willing to hurt someone they claim to care about will also be willing to hurt anyone who tries to interfere.

Most likely this decision to place her car and herself between her daughter and a gunman saved the girl's life (she's in serious but stable condition). This mother should be recognized as a hero.
