Statute Of Limitations Changed For Illinois

Until I read this story I didn't realize this statute of limitations change for civil lawsuits was in the works.

Since this change came in part because of a lawsuit against singer James Brown which was thrown out because of the current statute of limitations, some people may see this as allowing too much time. However, 2 years seems like it was designed not out a desire to be fair but out of a desire to protect rapists who may have escaped accountability in the criminal justice system. With the number of criminal cases that end in hung juries and the time that criminal cases can be in process, the civil courts and this change in statute of limitations may be some victim's only chance to see their rapists held accountable.

Until now, rapes involving threat or manipulation had a 2 year statute of limitations. But a new law throws that limit out.

For more information on this bill, read the press release on the new law which goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2008.
