How To Lose My Respect With One Question

Here's the question:

If the motivation for legalized abortion really is to save the lives of women, why aren't the people who make that argument also calling for the repeal of laws against rape?

I've seen this question on several blogs and all those who think this question is a gotcha against those who are concerned over the deaths of women due to pregnancy or unsafe abortions are dead wrong.

This question makes the asker look like a fetus worshipper who celebrates unwilling human sacrifice. I'm instantly reminded of those who see rapists as a tool of God used to plant the seed of life and who therefore want to block rape victims from getting birth control and abortions.

Rather than coming across as moral, these people come across as barbaric.

Wait.... what?? How does that even follow? Repealing laws against rape... would save the lives of women?!?

Whiskey, tango, foxtrot, over.

I don't see how that makes any sense at all! Does he think that rapists wouldn't kill their victims if rape wasn't illegal? Does he think that victims are killing their rapists because they've got this crazy idea that they have a right not to be raped? Is he making some bizarre rapist-as-planting-the-seed-of-life argument? It's like a non-sequitur wrapped in another non-sequitur. My brain hurts.

Merely adding to the completely confused.

Besides, it's not fear of personal death that would prompt me to have an abortion.
It's fear of life saddled with an unwanted child 24/7.

Re-reading slowly... I think I get it. It's the same argument as 'legalise prostitution' to keep women safe. 'legalise drugs' to stop black market dealers mixing them with dangerous compounds. 'legalise guns' so that everyone carries one and would-be murderers know they can get shot.
Makes perfect sense.

Because when rape is legal, it can be legislated and controlled.
Hang on...
Just like in wartime, right?
